I once got really upset in my first trip in Europe when I discover that I even though Herbal Essences was an International Company and had presence all through Europe it didn’t have the same products. What does this mean ? That I had to deal during 8 months with crazy spongy freeze hair. (The mousse herbal essences will be item number one in my list if I ever had to go to a dessert Island). The same happened when in I started to get homesick with olive oil, manchego cheese and jamon serrano, I wish just to have pancakes. Why pancakes ? My mom makes them every morning … and well how difficult could it be to find pancakes in a world where there is a McDonalds in every neighborhood. Wrong! I wasn’t lucky neither in Spain, Hungary, Germany, and France (I insist pancakes is Not the same than a crepe).
This is my second long trip in Europe, I knew what to except and now instead of missing or expecting I let myself surprise from the adaptation and perception that a culture has about other food (of course this trip I brought 4 cans of hair mousse). It’s a common question that I hear: what is American food? Or statements as There is no such thing as American food. But the more I travel I discover that there is and there is even an adaptation of American food in other countries, and most people even if they struggle to admit…love it. In the office I’m doing my internship they love Bagels, and they brought me to two places known as the best bagels delis. The conception of bagels in France is really different of what I experienced in the US. Ironically in France they give more importance to the content of a bagel than the bread itself. They mix many ingredients and each style of bagel is named after landmarks of NYC. There is even a bagel of foie gras! They are different, but amazingly good.
This food “issues¨ had play an important role in my life, maybe because of changing constantly you have to create ideal food, as a memory that doesn’t want to be erase.
A good friend once wrote me after hearing all my explorations of macdonals and mcflurrys :
“… siento que también tu búsqueda no es tan fructuosa porque tu senda es sinuosa y difusa, porque saltas a la novedad antes de pasar las cosas por los filtros que las vivencias y tu sensibilidad han formado. Esto tal vez por idealista, por no querer perder el “desayuno ideal de mcdonalds”, pero Sandra…..no hay desayuno ideal.
ENGLISH “I feel that your search is not as fruitful, because your path is winding and diffusive, you jump for the novelty before passing things through the filters that your experiences and your sensitivity have formed. This perhaps for your idealism, not wanting to lose the “ideal McDonalds breakfast”, but Sandra ….. there is no ideal breakfast”.
This last trip in France I see that many things have change, I no longer hold to those ideals, or maybe I’m creating ideal moments for a future… I hope not.
When you listen to French is as if you where eating a Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, yeah! taste delicious but you don’t have any idea of what the ingredients are. You can just name maybe: marshmallow, chocolate chips, and vanilla ice cream. When you learn a new word you cannot stop hearing it. A friend mentioned the other day that she really likes the phrase C’est marrant, and I had never heard it, but since explained what it meant and I recognized the pronunciation, I cannot stop hearing it. Marrant means funny, “its funny”. I also learned Truc two weeks ago, truc means stuff, but many stuff, they use it as a noun, for referring to things, and actions, and places, it can be use instead of choose. Another way to say truc is Machin, or Bidule, so you have many ways to name the uncertainty of things, places and life.
As my lessons continue, I feel that I am learning to parse this long String called French, what is most interesting is that there are words that I haven’t noticed that there are there.
(Parenthesis I)
Pendaison de crémaillère, as Nico just got his apartment I asked how would you called a house warming party in French, and Nico explained that it is called pendaison de crémaillère, La crèmaillère is an artifact used in old French houses fire stoves to control the fire. This artifact would be the last thing to put in your house and it would be needed to eat.
Arno is always hungry, and as the clock was hitting 12 he couldn’t wait longer and started talking about what we would have for lunch, so he started to wonder and to explore all the differents options that we could have for lunch, the only bad thing is that he is in diet, since he stop smoking he gain some weight. So there where many limitations in his wondering, until he arrived to the idea of a Greek Salad from the sandwich deli. Then is when he said: Y’a bon dans gros bidon. And so my lesson started: The literal translation would be “It would be good for my big bootle“. Bootle is a word also for belly or stomack, the best word to describe the expression is: It’s yummy.
() parenthesis
The computer of Arno broke, Julien and Arno where trying to fix it as I heard a weird french pronuntiation as if they where acting a cheap soap opera. I asked them what where they talking and they metion Supreme NTM the initials stands for Nique ta mère, he is one of the most famous rappers in France.
() parenthesis II
As I thought them a slang word in english I told them about Tomboy and the concept and they told me that in french they would say Garçon manque. Manque is to miss, garçon is men.
Verlan is a way to talk and to change words to say things in French, specially in France. This is my first approach to it, but they use it a lot in my office. They explain that the word is actually a verlam of a l’inver saying words backwards. My coworkers where telling me about Le Meuf of another friend. And well Le Mef comes from Femme where they say it backwards to Meuf that sounds like Mefe but they don’t say the e. Sounds really complicated. Another word they said a lot was Flic which is cop.
And for men they say Mec.
The sentence that they thought me in Verlam is:
Zyva t’es relou dans ta teuté Which is the form that you pronounce it which wants to say: Vas y, t’es lourd dans la tête. That means saying nonsense or crazy things. They had a hard time explaining the concept. But its also you drive me crazy.
What I like about learning new languages is being able to expand the conceptions that you have of your surroundings. Being able to describe experiences with precision.
At my internship I learned each day weird words.
Quand tu nos tiens
We where working in a Monday morning and the mood was comme Lundi. Arno puts music and we all started listing to heavy Rock n’Roll ass the crescendo started Arno says Quand tu nous tiens, that literally means: when you hold us. He explained that the phrase was used for moments of complete pleasure or hapinesss.

I’m interested in the different way we use language to communicate. Im of the believe that when you learn a new language you learn a new way to say things and you expand your abstraction of the world. Many concepts that before you tought of unexistant materialize in a way and instead of trying to find different explanations you just use a concept one word.
But still I find myself discussing with some americans in how things would be much easy if we all learned English. I would like to create an presentation or exhibition of the richness of different language. I have two ideas:
1. Is an AtoZ animation/presentation with some type of simple interaction with a language and how I interact with them.

Another idea is some interaction of unique words that cannot be translated in words, for example:
Antojito - food specially made for Crave… it will be like crave food
Cantinflear - when someone is talking nonsense
Malinchista - The one that loves the foreign world.
왕따 /Wangtha:/ - a person who is forced to be isolated mentally by the other person, usually in class at school, among the students. (Seugran)
Saudade!! It can means - I miss u!! — saudade is a feeling!! (Petra)
Weltschmerz world-pain denotes the kind of feeling experienced by someone who understands that the physical reality can never satisfy the demands of the mind.
The main problem I have identified in my design process is a lack of an idea that I feel passionate about. As last semester I started a new process of meeting new uses of technology, I draw a line of my past experiences and my past interest and submerged in the use of technology. The biggest barrier I have encountered is the one that separates human from technology. As with ITP the most important thing has become the technology per se without the concept. To be more clear my projects had no soul, no intention. I was unable to relate my background with what I was working with.
In a general sense, leaving out the idea of concept, I consider that one of my main problems in design is the developing stage. I like furnished projects, but I cannot bring myself to integrate this in my design process. My projects are constantly not finished and not clean.
This Spring Break, I went to Panama together with other ten ITP Students. We immerse ourselves in a total different dynamic, not just from NYC but also from the floor. I won’t go into details of the activities, but I will rather like to explain the significance that this trip has had in my design ideas. Working and living for ten days with students whose background and interest are really different. With time one could easily map what were the skills and the interest of each one of team. For me it was important to understand how passionate I can become with social issues. In this same line I am interested in politics, but politics more as a way to empowering humans to make changes to improve their lives
Playing can change the way we interact with things. Challenge I consider is one of our favorite addictions. Creating a simple game with a switch or button is the assignment for this week.
After working with Sonia and sound I was intrigued, so I decided to integrate Toy Design. I am working with Christian Cerrito and Alex Feng. We are designing an insert for a shoe, that will play sounds. This is the most simple description as the project is evolving, I decided to mess around and do a game with it. (I am still working with it). Simple explanation of the shoe is that it has to pressure sensors, like to switches front and back, when you press front makes one sound when you press back makes another sound.
I want to make a sound that consist in playing a secuence and the person will need to play it back, and from there recognize if the secuence was correct. So what I like is that is simple and that it involves to move your feet and to recognize secuence. I hope I can work with the coding… yes code is always a pain. Here are some pics of the shoes:
The new switch that will help you record your voice.
Instructions in how to use it:
1. Press the button,
2. Say Something
3. Release it and it will play back .
I use processing for the buttons and the program, dowloading Sonia, and an example from Amit’s webpage. The idea was to create a simple switch that would be accessible for everyone.
To create the switch I used two plastic cups (the ones we use for the water in itp). And one over the other one I created a simple switch circuit using alluminium. I also used the ipac that just arrived last class.
Here is an example of my code and the program.
Program:
1. When you start 2. When recording 3. Playing back
Here is a video of the look (that I know I could it work better with the look) but the feel was really good, and more with my last minute clay solution (a la mexicana).
Emotions
Emails
Long distance communication through email
What are the emails we writte?
After talking to my roomate, he share one of his hobbies for a project. That is finding the definitions of the definitions of a word and from there create a shape. So I would like to create a tree map of meanings of words starting with one. For my project I would like to create the program that will give me the definitions of the definitions of a word. I will like to define SPACE, and find all its definitions. Adn with this definition transform the space with all the words.
Another approach of this project is to apply it to language learning. I have been reading french books that include a index of words with its definitions. I am interested in finding
1. an algorithm that would guess all the words that I don’t know in French
2. That finds the meaning of the words that I don’t know and organizes them.
3. Addes as foot notes for he words that I dont know.
Running Spam what are the words that distinguish him and me when we writte emails? Email analyzing of a close friend with whom email has become one of our main forms of communication, I use the bayesian formula to find out which are the words we use in our emails. These are the results:
him me
I did another visualization of the words that distinguish him:
So as many ideas started I chose to keep going with the camera and dealing more with my not so good skills in flash. One of the things I really liked that I was able to make is the menu turn around:
In this menu is where you can find the main improvements of the camera, and well more of improvements I have simplyfied the model. I took out all the ¨modes¨ and put play in the menu and also I keep the mode ¨p¨ for people that want to have more controlled and ISO. I added size that will control the size of the Video and the size of the Photo that you take (already discussed in an earlier post the problem with size and resolution and because is a simpler version i thought with size people would understand better).
Instructions in how to use use:
The interaction is not that intuitive I was able to make the menu spin but I couldnt find the way from the spin to chose the selection so the spinning is just an addition but it does not do anything….
So you actually have to click in the option of the menu. And from there move around… Just rember the LCD is not a touch screen you have to interact via the up down or sideways in the right half of the camera. Good Luck and hope to hear comments. OHhh and I have sereral leaps… I would fix them another time.

Project description
The Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway
Gaining interest in Brooklyn’s historic waterfront has sparked the goal of bringing the residents of nearby neighborhoods closer to it. The Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway plan aims to match the ideals once achieved by Olmstead in the nineteenth century when he designed Prospect Park and the country’s first Parkway. Existing documentation about the project is detailed and outlines existing conditions, planning principles, design objectives and funding issues. In fact, the plan for the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway closely mirrors the objectives and concerns surrounding our upcoming Azuero Earth Project project in Panama. We believe that studying this waterfront project, an endeavor occurring right here at home, will prime us for Panama. Studying a project so close to us, in an area with which are already familiar, will allow us to enter Panama with an acuteness that can only save precious time and help to avoid missed opportunities. We look forward to such an undertaking, and we are confident that we are proceeding in a manner that will reward us with valuable experience that will make a positive and lasting impression on the Azuero Earth Project.
Paper Protoype of improvements of camera.
The improvements where worked and the paper prototype develop. The videos of usability test:
In the User Test with the digital camera the following problems where detected with the actual model.
This is a list of comments and Ideas that came out in the User-Test:
- Using the main menu. The extra buttons, not working well, they are not so important, and people try to use them a lot.
- Trash vs Resolution.
- The menu slide is not really intuitive
- Rarely is the main mode menu used and people think the options are there.
- People get frustrated when using the camera. Sounds of frustration.
- Impossible to find where to change the resolution.
- The browser space is really small, you need a lot of precision to move around.
- The mode menu is really comfortable.
- The display is good enough, enough space.
- The play is outside the menu option and is really hard to find, users look for it in the mode menu.
- The left hand is not used just the right one.
- They want to press play again to play the video.
- Delete all the photos, is not in trash so people have a hard time finding it.
- For David the mode menu was its main tool to move around the camera, he would read all the information really carefully. Finds ISO option to change the flash.
- Zoom is really good, easy to find. The menu is not obvious. wording confusing, too many functions. The zoom in video a little confusing.
- Middle to delicate, he thought he find the instructions. ¨Se ha ido a la mierda¨
- Video-Play really good nobody had a hard time with it.
- Format in Menu.
Improvement:
The time I had as an hypothesis to work with the camera is not realistic. I also realized that I ask for difficult task and that they took much more that I thought so. There are good things of this camera but mainly there are some issues. I decided to make six improvements:
1. Took all the mode options and leave the mode menu with 6 options, as shown:
2. Move the play button into the Mode Menu, and did not use that position because it was too confusing.
3. Added the Delete All option in trash
4. Move Resolution into the Mode Menu. *I named size, because I thought people would understand better.
5. I removed the Display button over the menu button and replace it for trash.
6. I propose a divided browser, and a bigger center of the browser, so people could press more comfortably.

Product: Digital Camera
Task:
a) Take two pictures:
1. A picture without flash high resolution.
2. A picture with zoom and with flash with low resolution.
b) Take a video:
1. High resolution, to something near.
2. Low resolution.
c) Play Back
1. Play back the photos
2. Play back the video
3. Delete the first video you took.
d) format the camera. (delete all the files that are there).
How can it be achieved?
Example (Video):::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
As I establish the task depending if the user has interacted with a cyber-shot or not, it would vary the type of interaction. The prediction for the development of the task would be the following:
The person would first look for the button power or on, after turning it on, he/she would look for the shooter, after finding it he/she would take a picture, but the camera would be in video mode, after a moment of trying to take the picture the person would realize that he is recording, would then press the shooter and would try to look for the “Mode Menu” he would find there in small icons a film strip, and would change it ideally to the green icon that represents the camera. From there he/she would press again the shooter.
To the second step the person would try to figure out how to change the resolution, I consider to find the resolution change one of the most difficult settings, he/she would try to go into the menu after move the settings with play, until he discovers that he needs to press trash while the shotter is on. From there the resolution would be change.
The video he/she already had experience when turning on the camera where the mode menu was, so he would move it and shoot, but it would be in low resolution, but again he/she already nows where to change the resolution.
For the playback he would look for the play sign, that is actually sensitive (you can touch and feel the triangle) from there look for the indications to scroll the picture.
The person would use the scrolled to move around the photos. To play back the video he/she would take a considerable amount of time to find the control, is not really specified.
To delete I consider a really good sign the button of the trash can, and from there the lcd tells you the rest.
The task to format all the photos I consider the most difficult because you have to go to menu there you have to go to setup, that opens another menu with another menu, from there you will find four icons and you have to chose the second one that is in a from of a memory stick there you will find the option to format. This I consider the longest step.

The metro riders
The map is the instrument which locates a person in space, is the one that synthesize it and makes it look so small but at the time so big. The purposes of maps can vary extensively, but when we refer to a subway map its main intention is to help one get to a place. It helps one create connections and generate a strategy to get to a place the most efficient way. In a subway map, one can judge in a small model different directions.
The main user of a subway map are the passengers that ride it. When we refer to New York City metro system the main users can be classified in three important groups: Tourists, Commuters & Locals. There is an important difference in the use that each of this group gives to the map, for a Tourist the subway map is its most important instrument, he usually carries it and would need to refer to it constantly. While a Local and a Commuter would create with time its comfort zone in which he would move without depending so much in the map, he won’t carry the portable version, he would relay mostly in the maps that are posted in the station or in the train.
The aspects to consider in an analysis in the design of the subway map is that it should be readable, understandable, practical, and comforting. It should be an ambassador to the tourist and an instrument for the locals. The main communicators in a map are the text, the subway station names, its colors, and letters, the actual cartography of a place, the colors to divide spaces. The use of icons to signal accesibilty. The primary figures are the most used such as squares, periods and lines. Contrast between also primary colors and complementary ones. Size is an important element of a subway map, it can vary according to the type of usage. Also there is a touch and feel in the interaction of a map, or a zoom out zoom in in a computational interaction.
Proposed Abstract subway Map of New York
After some research in internet forums and having two friends visiting from Madrid this week I have learned more about the subway map of NYC. As I coud see in a discussion forum, there is a conflict in opinions in the people who use the subway. Some people argue that they would like the map to be abstract but more clear; others argue that they like more the accuracy of the actual map and would rather be confused in its language. The history of the design of the map has been of this two concepts clarity vs geographycal abstraction. Computerized Interaction with maps is becoming more accurate, as more people have access in the U.S. to gps, computers, and other devices (such as i-phone), this has change the interaction that one has with a subway map. But as mentioned before tourists still relay in the print map.
When asked for directions a New Yorker will try to be the most precise posible, he would respond in exact miles, even talk about half a mile. The map resembles the diversity cultural identity that lives in New York, as it tries to satisfy everybody, it looks for clarity, looks for precision. For example, it tells one the track railway, it gives one the main bus stops, it tells one the name of the main streets, gives one indications to go to the airport. Every station specifies if its accessible for people with disabilities. It changes of typography for signal the name of the stations and the the name of the line. There is a lot of information contained, making the map dimensions too big. Also, the map is not counter intuitive and at first sight it can be intimidating. It tries to satisfy al the tastes and possible uses, but does not fulfill any of them because of its impracticability. One can spend a reasonable time trying to opening fold the map in the correct order, and it usually rips. The map creates a sensation of being in this chaos. It is common, when driving the subway, somebody stands-up to see the map, it takes them a lot of time, first to locate themselves and later to identify where they are going. It is an inclusive map but overwhelming. There is a learning curve in the use of maps. The NYC metro map breaks the diagram in which subways maps are sketch in other subway systems.
Creating a map that is more user-centered can be a challenging task because is difficult to refer of the NYC metro users as a whole, thinking in a social and cultural factors because of its diversity and its different uses of the metro. The product could give more satisfaction if people could put their finger on a line and trace it all the way to their destination. I would first propose a design which would not create uncertainty, a design that can contra-rest the difficulties of riding the metro. Create two different maps one for the tourist which will highlight what the common issues in a more clear and practical form.
Ideas can change after you have made some research, and is sad when you realize that this idea is not so simple as it sound, probably as an effect of watching to much fantasy movies. So what I tough I could do with metal and magnet, it was not possible, because it could to raise up the fabric, the only thing that could work for my proposed prototype was air… air is the only material that could expand in a small space, so I started to research in the use of small air-pumps, but then the idea sounded really complicated, so I went back again with magnet and liquid metal.. nope… where could you contain the material, the I thought of Mercury, like a thermometer, but still Mercury is completely visual, and of course is really messy, and poisoness…
So I had to redeem, I changed to the simplest idea in my mind a wrist watch that instead of the handle movings the phase would move for itself,
In the first photo is one of the ideas I liked the best, but could not come with the idea of the design, as easy that it seemed it is one of the most hards to make. I wanted to make a bubble wrap bracelet that will pup up in Braille the exact hour.
As the first week went by really really fast, I started workin with what will be the first Assignment, again struggling with the basics… using Java, downloading Eclipse, using the CVS, the most difficult was working with Terminal. By the end I had little time to really start experimenting with Strings, so what I did was play around with what was in the CVS. Fist I modified a chapter of the Big Book that is the most important book for the alcoholic anonoymos, changing things around and looking bor the word “Being”. After finishing with the Big Book I went and look for the most important book in Mexican Literature called Pedro Paramo, by Juan Rulfo. This book is known by its know for its simplicity and its richness. So what I did is took out all the spanish prepositions (a, ante, bajo, con, contra, de, desde, durante, en, entre, hacia, hasta, mediante, para, por, segun, si, sobre, tras) that are words I fill if you take out you can make a new story. And so I did, the program looks for this words and the next words, which rewrittes the text. The second program takes the words acompanied by the preposition so one can be able to analyze better the richness of use of adjetives.
Here you can find the text

Programming A to Z it is.
First day of class first class…
Daniel Shiffman gives this course, with his great sense of humor he starts by explaining that the class is not going to be at all of graphics, is going to be just programming, and programming words, and text. The course will look to analyze Data Structure and text analysis, such as spam filtering, and the probability of words.
Why programming A to Z my first Choice? ICM left me like in the middle, or the amount of energy I gave to it wasn’t enough, and well also when working in ICM assignments I felt really frustrated when working with text, it was like I was crippled. And I don’t want to be crippled!!!! also having the opportunity to work with Java, and leaving processing behind. Dedicating more time to programming, and giving myself the opportunity to explore more this world, and well when you program you feel like you where a god and could make the rules of your own world, it also gives you more panorama, and changes your paradigm of judging situations. And I know I don’t want to be a programmer, but I will like to have the skills that programmers have. And well also the romantic part of playing with text, and words.
Ok now back to the class
We will be working this week with java basics and next week with Regular Expressions. Shiffman gave us the reasons why we are going to use Java instead of PHP, Pearl or Phyton, one of the reasons is that is one of the languages he manages the best, and the other is that working with Java would give us the flexibility to move around.
He recomended to look into several web pages or other projects such as: Gnoetry or the Nora Project .
We also got in to explainig how to use the CVS, that is a program to share code as I understood. Also he explain the advantages of using Eclipse.
He recommended as resource the following books:
Mastering Regular Expressions Powerful Techniques for Perl and Other Tools By Jeffrey E. F. Friedl
Words and Rules the ingredients of Language By Steven Pinker
Twisty Little Passages
A passage to interactive Fiction By
Nick Montfort
Finally we worked with some basics of java and we review the exercises due for next week.
ICM MID TERM
EMOTION TRACKING
One of the projects I’ve wanted to develop was a system to track emotions. And well because of personal experience with extreme daily emotions I wanted to focus in women. These because of an identity that has been shared between females and the well known PMS. Also one of my intentions is to create a device that can help women to better understand their emotional and hormonal cycle. When you know yourself better and keep track of this information you are able to manage your emotions or even to let them be. I know of a lot of women who try to track but in the lack of a system they are just able to draw or writte information in their agendas, without processing information.
I decided to start developping just a simple project for ICM in which I could clarify more my ideas and see what are my possibilities, and my limitations. So it was more of a rough draft of what I want to do. This project will be my final project for ICM and PhysCom. For my final project I will be working with Seungran Woo and Meng Li. And I like the group because for this project we were able to chose who we wanted to work with and I put the project in the table and Seugran and Meng where really interested.
Emotion Interaction : Irritation
The medium is the message.
The phrase “the medium is the message” makes me wonder what is the medium and what is the message. As the medium is consider like an extension of the human ody, the message could not be reduced to the content or information, with this tought we would take out one of the most important charachtersitic of medium that is its power to modify reletions and human acivity. Mc Luhan defines the message like the medium related with rithym. The content is an ilusion in the sense that it uses a mask.
Medium and message come together as one can contain the other. Mc Luhan gives the example of the telegraph that contains the printed word that contains literacy, that contains a discourse, so this is why the message transforms in the medium in which is contained. W don’t notice that there is an interaction between the media, and given that their effects to the audience can be powerful, the content of every message is less important than the medium itself.
Hot and Cold Media.
McLuhan makes an clasification of media as hot or cool, this comes from tecnical meanigs such as definition and infomration, that has a more sensorial experienience that in the meaning of the words. In the TV “high definition, signifies precision, detail, quality refering in every visual image. According to his Mc Luhan says that the letter of the abc, the numbers, photogrpahs, maps are objects of high defeniniton. Such media sends a lot of information and has a passive receptor. On the contrary the forms that are not defined in such qualit such as cartoons, are low definition because our eyes have to complete whatever is missing to obtain the whole message. This principle of filling the white aps is also apply to sound. when you have little inforamtion, the media of low resolution ask for an active receptor.
The medium is high definition are the hot and the one of low are the cool.
Well after some moments of stress and many technical problems we presented on Wednesday. The
